Calm, Values, Edges in Art, My Painting Seaside Village Boats

In my painting, Seaside Village Boats, I wanted to convey a sense of calm and peace. I used little contrast in values (gray scale). The focal point is the boat on the left front side that has the darkest dark and lightest light. I repeated the dark value in the front building. I also used soft edges. There are a few hard edges, i.e. the 2 front boats. By using little value contrast and soft edges, I was able to achieve a calm mood. French artist, Claude Lorraine was known for his atmospheric and tranquil landscape paintings.

This is a digital painting using traditional oil painting techniques and a painterly approach. I used virtual brushes and paints (Corel Painter 12 and Intuos5 drawing pen and tablet).

Power with Light and Shadow in Art, My Painting Gymnast

In my painting, Gymnast, I again wanted to convey the strength and power of the figureI mentioned modeling the figure is a technique to convey strength. I modeled the figure with warm light, a mid tone where appropriate and a cool shadow. Italian artist, Caravaggio modeled his figures and gives them a powerful look. Caravaggio was considered a leader in using dark values (gray scale) where the form emerged from the dark background and form shadow into the light. He achieved drama using strong chiaroscuro; pronounced contrast between light and shadow. In my painting, the gymnast is also turning toward the left. I used a light muted blue white to push the leg and upper body back.

This is a digital painting using traditional oil painting techniques and a painterly approach. I used virtual brushes and paints (Corel Painter 12 and Intuos5 drawing pen and tablet).

Strength, Grace, Integration in Art, My Painting Dancer

In my painting, Dancer, I wanted to convey the strength, grace and power of the figureModeling the figure is a technique to convey strength. I modeled the figure with warm light, a mid tone where appropriate and a cool shadow. Michelangelo modeled his wonderful figures to give them a powerful look. The dancer’s pose emphasizes her grace. It is important to integrate the figure or form with the painting’s background. In my painting, I used blurred and soft edges. Also the light on the upper leg is repeated in the background near the leg. Frequently artists also blend the background into the form’s shadow. I sometimes repeat the hue (color) of the shadow with lines in the background to provide movement for the eye. I used this technique under the dancer’s leotard.

This is a digital painting using traditional oil painting techniques and a painterly approach. I used virtual brushes and paints (Corel Painter 12 and Intuos5 drawing pen and tablet).

Conveying Heat in Art, My Painting Desert Landscape

I wanted to convey the heat in my painting, Desert Landscape. After completing my painting I laid a mainly transparent glaze of white over the entire painting. In painting atmospheric perspective, artists paint a light muted blue white to achieve atmosphere. However, I painted a transparent muted yellow over my white to convey heat. Edges of shapes are also soft due to the heat and atmosphere. Dust particles may also be seen. Value contrasts are not marked. English artist, Turner was excellent in conveying atmosphere.

This is a digital painting using traditional oil painting techniques and a painterly approach. I used virtual brushes and paints (Corel Painter 12 and Intuos5 drawing pen and tablet).

Unity and Strength in Art, My Painting "Island Boats"

In my painting, Island Boats (top) I wanted to paint the colorful boats in the busy harbour. My focal area is where the yellow and white boats overlap. The diagonal line of boats creates an interesting pattern and movement through the painting. When you look at the boats, you can see I used 2 point linear perspective. The two sides of the boats move towards different vanishing points on the horizon line. The mast on the white boat overlaps the mid ground and background linking the planes together and maintaining unity.  The mast is at right angles to the white boat and this contributes to harmony and strength of the overall painting. The lower painting is by Monet, Boats on Beach Club. Monet did a number of paintings with boats. Monet also used boats' masts to link planes and create harmony and strength.

This is a digital painting using traditional oil painting techniques and a painterly approach. I used virtual brushes and paints (Corel Painter 12 and Intuos5 drawing pen and tablet).
