Speed and Movement in Art, My Painting "Hockey Race"

In my painting, Hockey Race, I wanted to convey the competition between the players for the hockey puck. It was necessary to paint speed and movement of the players. I painted only 2 figures instead of the recommended odd numbered shapes, i.e. 3. The painting is closely cropped. The figures are diagonally shaped and bending forward. Many edges are blurred to convey the movement including the blurred hockey stick and puck. The colors of each player are different. The colors of the shirts are complementary hues. The values of the pants are different. The upper background shows individual blurred brush strokes and a curved shape contributing to the action.

This is a digital painting using traditional oil painting techniques and a painterly approach. I used virtual brushes and paints (Corel Painter 12 and Intuos5 drawing pen and tablet).

Movement, Sun in Art, My Painting "Golfer"

In my painting, Golfer, I wanted to convey the movement of the golf club and the contrast of light and shadow on a warm sunny day. I used the golfer’s gesture and smudged the club to emphasize movement. The warm light on the ground contrasts with the cool shadow. This temperature and value (light, dark, gray scale) contrast were repeated in the figure to show the warm sunny day.

This is a digital painting using traditional oil painting techniques and a painterly approach. I used virtual brushes and paints (Corel Painter 12 and Intuos5 drawing pen and tablet).

Gesture in Art, My Painting Shopping Outdoor Market

I wanted to paint the gesture of the woman in my painting, Shopping Outdoor Market. The woman is my focal area; she is located at the Golden Mean. There is the greatest contrast of light and dark values (gray scale). I liked the pattern I created on the coat. I used one point linear perspective. Viewers enter my painting from the bottom left corner. Viewers are stopped from leaving the painting by the stand of fruit in the background.

This is a digital painting using traditional oil painting techniques and a painterly approach. I used virtual brushes and paints (Corel Painter 12 and Intuos5 drawing pen and tablet).

Convey Your Painting's Goal with Art Elements

You see a scene or image that you want to paint, why do want to paint it? Was it the colors in a landscape; the gestural pose of a figure?  Decide what you want to convey and consider the elements of art to meet your objective. In my above painting, Baseball Catcher, I wanted to convey the skill and agility of the catcher. I determined my focal point and items to leave in or remove from my work. My format is square and I did a close crop of the 2 figures. I left out the batter and the background crowd. The background is 3 simple shapes. The umpire is painted in dark values (gray scale, light, dark) and muted hues (intensity, colors). The catcher has light and dark values. The catcher’s warm browns and cool green uniform create temperature contrast. The location of the catcher on the support follows the rule of thirds (1/3 from the right side).

This is a digital painting using traditional oil painting techniques and a painterly approach. I used virtual brushes and paints (Corel Painter 12 and Intuos5 drawing pen and tablet).
