Use of Light and Dark in Art, Artist Honore Daumier

In a prior post, I wrote about the brilliant light achieved with the use of dark values (gray scale). The above painting is by French artist, HonorĂ© Daumier (1808 –1879). In his painting, The Chess Players (1863), the light is shining from the left side. The player on the right side has his face, left shoulder, hand and left arm in light. The wrist and hand of the other player is also illuminated by light. Part of the chess board is in the light. Daumier has also painted a dark line around the profile and shoulder of the player on the right. This dark line contrasts with the light. Surrounded by dark values, the light is more brilliant. As I previously mentioned, smaller areas of light are more brilliant when surrounded by larger areas of dark.
