The Art of Turner - Color Intensity & Luminosity in Painting

This painting is by J. M. W. Turner, an English Romantic artist (1775 – 1851). The painting is Norham Castle, Sunrise. Although he went through changes, Turner was best known for his use of color before color theory was known. Turner used neutral tints (white with gray hues) that led to luminous areas in his art. Strong areas of tints (white with pure hues) were painted beside muted tints and grays enhancing color intensity (saturation). White was not used alone. Turner used gray light and middle values to create simultaneous contrast in intensity. Dark values were limited. The gray scale image of the painting shows it was primarily painted with light and middle tone values.
