My Painting of a Male Head

This is my last post prior to the New Year. My next post will be on Tuesday, January 4, 2011. I wish my readers a wonderful holiday season.

This is a painting I did using water soluble oils. I used a complementary color scheme of muted orange and blue. This is a sketch rather than a portrait painting. I was interested in painting the man’s features and the head covering. I like to paint faces in the crowd that interest me. I am charmed by head coverings, earrings and unique hair styles. I frequently change colors and more to suit my interest. When I paint skin, I like to use a warm muted orange. This hue (color) is enhanced by the cool complementary blue background. I like three quarter profiles. These profiles provide opportunities to more clearly see the faces’ features.

My New Still Life Painting; Analysis of Color's Elements

In a prior post, I wrote about the compositional structure and background in my new painting, Apples and Pear. In studying the elements of color, the painting has a dominant cool temperature. I will be adding more shadow on the leaves to the right. The hues are primarily the complements, red and green. Complementary colors enhance each other. The warm light source is from the left and therefore form shadows are cool. The middle tone values (gray scale) are dominant with a small amount of light and dark values. The intensity of the fruit and leaves was strong. I muted these colors with their complements.

My Still Life Painting; Compositional Structure & Background.

I have almost completed this still life painting on canvas. Like many still life paintings, the compositional structure is a triangle. The apex of the triangle is the leaves. The leaves are not my focal point. There is a second smaller triangle that starts at the upper apple; this apple is my focal point. The background and its hues (colors) need careful consideration. My background is a muted red green. The table is a lighter muted red green. I deliberately made the background hues with the hues of my subjects, red and green. This use of similar hues results in a harmonious painting.

Backgrounds in Still Life Paintings

In a previous post I wrote about my painting, Orange and Grapes on Plate. Backgrounds of still life paintings are important and need careful consideration. In my painting, I used a muted violet. This hue (color) enhances the warm orange slices. I frequently paint backgrounds using a mixture of 2 hues that are from objects in my painting. The main hue of this mixture is usually the complement of my focal point. As I also mentioned, dark colors are not close to objects I wish to paint with a luminous glow. Dark values will detract from the luminosity of the object. Colors may be dark and still transparent. Transparent paints will push a shape further back from the picture plane. Representational artists often use transparent paints in the backgrounds of their art.

Still Life Paintings - Master Artist Chardin

French artist, Jean-Baptiste Simeon Chardin (1699-1779) was a master at painting still life subjects. Chardin painted in a realistic style and was known for his use of color and light. The above painting is, The Attributes of the Arts (1766). The compositional structure is a triangle; often seen in still life paintings. The head of the statue is at the top of the triangle. This is an important visual location. The light source is on the left and results in depth and color. Chardin turned ordinary subjects into wonderful art with his compositions, colors and light.

Barbizon Artist, Millet: The Harsh Land & Work

The French artist, Jean-Francois Millet (1814 - 1875) believed in painting outdoors. However, although a member of the Barbizon school, he would observe the outdoors and then paint it in his studio. The Barbizon artists painted realism in art. Natural scenes became the subjects of their paintings. Millet painted peasants working in rural areas: similar to his own background. He painted workers in the fields with strong light. His powerful compositions and light influenced a number of artists, i.e. Van Gogh, Sisley. In his painting, The Gleaners (around 1857), Millet painted the workers gathering wheat left behind after the reaping. He paints the harsh, dry land. His use of strong lights and shadows contributes to an emotional image. The figures are weighted down. Millet shows the peasants trying to survive.

Achieving Space in Art - Overlap & Diagonals

There are a number of ways in painting to achieve the illusion of depth in space. Overlapping shapes and forms is one of the strongest ways to achieve space. Even though other art elements may seem more powerful, i.e. a white value shape, overlapping will take priority. Diagonal directions strongly suggest space. You can see this with linear perspective when diagonal lines converge at the horizon line (eye level). In my painting, Building in Landscape, the building overlaps the trees and this contributes to space. The building is in 2 point linear perspective. The lines and planes of the building move diagonally and converge at the horizon line also adding to a sense of space. The path is diagonal and changes from a thick to a thin shape and it forms a diagonal shape leading behind the building. In my prior post about India’s Maharaja Exhibit at the Art Gallery of Ontario viewers see an emphasis on the picture plane and not depth in space. There are other art elements and techniques artists use to achieve depth in space.

India's Maharaja Exhbit in Canada at the Art Gallery of Ontario

I saw the exhibit, Maharaja: The Splendour of India’s Royal Courts at Toronto’s Art Gallery of Ontario (AGO, on until April 3, 2011). The exhibit includes paintings, furniture, jewellery and more made for India’s kings. I became interested in the paintings done before British colonial rule. The paintings reminded me of ancient Egyptian and Asian art. Many figures were in profile. There was little if any modeling of figures, linear or atmospheric perspective. The paintings were decorative with a focus on the picture plane and flatness instead of depth in space and the third dimension. Instead of linear perspective there was a vertical elevation of objects on the picture plane. The royal figures were seen with a nimbus around the head; larger than other figures, or twice in the painting. The exhibit is well worth a visit as it shows a different style from western art. It also highlights India’s history. There is a link to the AGO on this site.

Degas, Master Artist of Composition: His Painting, "Cirque Fernando"

This painting is by French master artist, Edgar Degas. Miss Lala at the Cirque Fernando was painted in 1879. Degas is known for his striking compositions. In this painting, we view the figure from below. The figure’s location in the upper left and close to the picture plane increases depth. The architectural structure, i.e. the repetition of windows, provides movement. Degas emphasized light and color. Color and brushstrokes are seen in the clothing and shoes.

Luminous Light on a Detail from my Painting, The Boat

This is a detail from a painting I am doing. The detail is my focal point, a boat. Again, I wanted to focus on luminosity. The light is from the left side and the light is best to paint as a glow from within the object, the left side of the outer boat. The right inside of the boat is also receiving light. These sides have been glazed with layers of warm yellow, orange and red (transparent layers over transparent dry layers). I plan to adjust the color on the left side of the outer boat. The bench, oar, bottom and back of the boat are painted with a muted blue green to enhance my pure light colors (hues). There are no dark values so contrast of intensity (saturation) is enhanced. The top edges of the boat are painted a muted light violet blue to reflect the color of the sky and contrast with the luminous light.

Gustave Klimt & Secession Art, The Three Ages of Woman

The artist, Gustav Klimt, was born in Vienna in 1862. This work is titled, The Three Ages of Woman (1905) and is oil painted on canvas. Klimt was famous for the gold and silver in his mosaics. His work is 2 dimensional and flat on the picture plane. This painting is based on the Vienna Secession style; a movement influenced by factors such as Japanese woodcuts and impressionism. The movement included painters, sculptors, and architects. The artists disagreed with existing conservatism and wanted to paint outside the restrictions of academic tradition. In Klimt's painting, the colourful background is abstract and enhances the 3 figures. The woman with beautiful skin and red hair is lovingly holding the delicate child. The older woman has a hunched posture. Her aged skin and bowed head made some viewers uncomfortable.

Luminosity, A Style of American Painting

I wrote in prior posts about luminosity in my paintings. Luminous techniques achieve a glow from within an object. However, luminosity was also an American style of painting during the 1850s to the 1870s. Artists painted with luminous techniques in landscapes and seascapes. These artists painted during the time of the Hudson River School and their paintings were often considered impressionist although techniques and results are different. Artist, John F. Kensett’s above paintings, Bash- Bish Falls (1857) and Niagara Falls and the Rapids (1851-1852), show this luminosity. In his painting Bash-Bish Falls, we see the luminous color between the background rocks and also on the rock in the back left. The lower sky in his painting, Niagara Falls and the Rapids, is luminous and atmospheric. Luminosity is breathtaking when light is part of the subject. I used light shining on my orange slices in my painting, Orange, Grapes and Plate, to achieve the glow shining from my slices. The orange slices were surrounded by a muted complement see prior posts). A single layer of paint does not create luminosity. Repeated layers of transparent paint are used over dry layers.

Canada's Remembrance Day is on November 11

Tomorrow is Canada's Remembrance Day. We wear the poppy and honour the members of the armed forces who fought and continue to fight for us. They provide us with peace and security. I thank you for my life and my freedom. I will remember.

In Flanders Fields
By: Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae, MD (1872-1918)
Canadian Army

In Flanders Fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.

Circular Compositional Structure in My New Painting

In a prior post I discussed luminosity and illumination from 2 light sources in my above painting. The painting’s compositional structure is circular. The shape of the grapes curves around the plate. The diagonal shapes of the orange slices and the cast shadow on the left adds animation to the painting. The close up view also adds animation. The measurable centre of the painting is approximately mid way and at the bottom of the centre orange. The balancing centre is the 2 front orange slices; close to the measurable centre as expected. Since the compositional structure is a circle, there is movement around the outer edge of the picture plane. There is only a little movement in depth because of the overhead view.

Painting Luminosity and Illumination from 2 Light Sources

I am working on the above painting. In prior posts, I wrote about art techniques to obtain luminous colors and illumination. In this painting, I wanted the orange slices to be luminous. Pure light hues glow from within the orange slices. Dark values (gray scale) are not near the pure orange slices; particularly the slice on the far right side. There is no white in my painting. The oranges’ rinds are glazed with a pure yellow orange color (hue) over white. If strong darks or white were near my orange slices, luminosity would be reduced. To achieve luminosity, the high intensity (saturation) of the orange slices needed to be beside a muted complement that is close in value. I was also excited about the illumination from both sides of the set up. Most paintings only have 1 light source shining on the objects. In my painting there are 2 light sources from opposite sides. The light shining from the right side is stronger than the light from the left side. I find the pattern of cast shadows attractive from this overhead view. One light source on objects should be stronger than other light sources.

It is expected that today’s Friday 4 hour and subsequent sale will be hoodies. Since buyers may customize products in my Zazzle.com shop, you can search shirts or T-shirt and customize these design styles as hoodies. The Artist, Picasso, & The Start of Cubism

The Spanish artist, Pablo Picasso, developed several art approaches. His painting, Les Demoiselles d’Avignon (1907) is the beginning of Cubism. The painting is from the first analytical cubist stage. The figures are separated into parts and constructed to show several viewpoints. The faces are diverse masks. The face on the left is early Egyptian art. Shapes lack depth and are on the picture plane. The Cubist artists wanted to show all sides of an object instead of a single view.

Value, Intensity, Focal Point & More in My Landscape Painting

This is my painting, Cottage in Landscape. You can see in the gray scale image the major dark values; the roof, windows and fence. The light is shining from the left side. The muted blue violet color and the yellow color (hues) are complements and enhance each other; the pure yellow hue is chiefly enhanced. Because of the high contrast between the dark and light values, intensity and luminosity of the yellow hue are reduced. The yellow plane of the cottage does not glow. In my previous post and painting, The Poppy, I wanted & achieved luminosity. The color temperatures of the grass and sky ensure a dominant cool temperature. The dark fence leads in toward the cottage, my focal area. The building is in 2 point linear perspective. The background trees prevent the viewer from getting lost in the background. I prefer luminosity and intensity contrast for my paintings.

Achieving Luminosity in My New Painting, The Poppy

I did not post yesterday due to technical problems. I have written about the difference between illumination (light from a light source on an object, i.e. the sun) and luminosity (light shining or glowing from an object). This is my new painting on canvas, The Poppy. In this painting I wanted to focus on the luminosity of the flower’s petals. Luminosity is achieved when light pure hues, i.e. the orange red in my painting, are beside muted middle values (gray scale). The middle values should be complements and have temperature contrast. Value contrast should not be sharp. My greens are muted and mid to dark values. They are the complement of the orange red petals. These green hues are cool and contrast with the warm temperature of the petals. I put the muted green hues at the sides of the canvas. I also put a lighter muted green on the edges of the poppy. This created the luminosity seen in my painting. The yellow centre was a problem because it was light in value and competed with the petals. I had to mute this area with light green so it did not detract from the luminosity of the petals.

The Circle and the Balancing Centre in Paintings

I have previously discussed the compositional structure, the circle. The circle suggests a middle point. The circle moves the viewer around the outside and also in and out of the picture plane. All compositional structures have a centre where the vertical and horizontal lines of the support cross. In the circular structure, a balancing centre is not as apparent. The balancing centre is usually at or near the point where the structural lines cross. There must be a feeling of some final point of balance. In Renoir’s painting, The Luncheon of the Boating Party, the balancing centre is at the woman raising a glass. It is calm and sure. This calm centre is characteristic of a painting’s balancing centre. The measurable centre is close; the shoulder of the seated man in the dark brown coat and hat. The balancing centre is close to the measureable centre or tension would work against the overall painting’s balance. (N. Goldstein, Design and Composition)

Gothic Art. Giotto & the Start of Modern Art

In the middle ages, the Roman era of realism was followed by Byzantine art. Art was made for religious purposes and comprised of symbols. Romanesque art stuck to the objectives of Byzantine art. Figures were static and not modeled. Gothic art came after Romanesque art and was about natural figures and background. The Italian artist, Giotto (1267- 1337), helped transform the inactive art of the medieval era. His paintings showed distance, perspective and modeling of figures with light and shadow. In his painting, Madonna Enthroned (around 1310), the faces are animated and the figures are more realistic. Giotto used light and color (hue, temperature) to model his figures and cloth. This painting is considered one of the best of Giotto’s art. His techniques were new. Some people consider Giotto the father of modern art.

Contrasts of Color Intensity and Value in Art

This is a detail from a painting I am doing. In a prior post, I mentioned that the color element, value (gray scale), is more important than intensity. I have painted the house in sunlight on the left side. It is yellow. The roof, windows and door are a dark muted blue violet. The hues (colors) are complements. I have painted a lighter muted blue violet under the roof’s eave. However, because the muted blue violet is a dark value, the yellow hue has little luminosity. You can use dark values in a painting and still achieve luminous color. The color with a dark value should not be close to the area that you want to have luminous contrast of intensity. You can see the difference between illumination , a light shining on an object and luminosity, a light shining or glowing from or within an object.

Baroque Art. Caravaggio's Painting, Conversion of Saint Paul

The Baroque era of art lasted through the 1600s and arose from the Renaissance and Mannerist eras. These artists achieved unity in their paintings using diagonal compositions and light and color. Caravaggio was an Italian artist who achieved dramatic contrasts through light and shadow. In his painting, Conversion of Saint Paul, Caravaggio’s use of light and shadow gives the scene more drama and force. The foreshortening of the figure adds to the drama. (J. Vigue)

Contrast in Color Intensity in Art; My New Painting

This is my new painting, Rose Petals. I enjoyed the lyrical movement created by the petals. I also liked the overhead lighting. This lighting created cast shadows on the petals. Since rose petals are translucent, in reality, the cast shadows had more red. I always enjoy walking by a transparent green streetcar shelter. Because the shelter is transparent, the cast shadow on the sidewalk is green. With overhead lighting, the top of the petals were light. I made the left and central petal tops yellow to contrast with the muted violet hues. I achieved partial luminosity despite the stark value contrasts. Value is more important to perceive than intensity. The value contrast reduced the luminous effect.

The Art of Delacroix; Tonal & Hue Contrasts

This is French artist, Eugene Delacroix’s painting, The Barque of Dante (1822). Delacroix was a leading Romantic artist who rejected the academic rules of his time. This painting is one of the first major shifts in Delacroix's paintings. His use of complementary hues (colors) painted side by side preceded the art of the Impressionists. The figure at the left front of the painting has been foreshortened. The dark values around the figure and also the mid tones modeling the body contrast and enhance the figure’s luminosity.

Circular Compositions in Art. Zazzle Sales Information

This painting, Dutch Interior 1 (1928), is by Spanish artist, Joan Miro (1893 – 1983). It is a circular compositional structure. Miro achieved balance and unity by using repeated shapes and colors. Circular compositions suggest a central point even when nothing identifies the centre. When several shapes are in a group they suggest their own central point. A circular design leads the viewers around the painting and in and out of the painting. (H.R. Poore, N. Goldstein)

The second image is my painting, Cherries. I have also cropped the image to show the circular composition of the cherries. The cherries are circular shapes and combine to create a larger circular design. The cropped image can stand as a painting. The image is united by repeated shapes and colors. The design leads viewers around the painting and in and out of the painting.

Color Mats & Frames for My Painting

This is my painting, Burpee Tomatoes. I used Photoshop Elements to add a double mat and frame. The painting is 8 by 10 inches; the mat, frame and painting are 13 by 15 inches. I like a 0.25 inch neutral gray lower mat. The gray will enhance the colors in my painting. In a prior post, I wrote many people recommend that the upper mat be the complement of the dominant color in the painting. I did not like the muted red upper mat; the complementary hue of the green tomatoes. Since the green tomatoes were at the sides of the painting, I decided to try a muted green. I like this selected hue of the upper mat (1.5 inches) with my painting. If you purchase a painting, you can try different hues out on a similar software program. You would first scan the painting into your computer. You might also take your painting to a frame it yourself store and view it with different mats. Remember you should also consider the color of your walls and the overall decor.

Degas and his Compositional Structures in Paintings

Degas was a master artist of compositional structures. His paintings with complex, multiple forms were unified with values and other art elements. In his painting, The Cotton Exchange, Degas joined his many figures with dark values. In the gray scale image, examine the man in the foreground. The dark hat overlaps and joins the table’s dark edge. His arm overlaps the leg of the table. The man at the front right of the canvas joins with the dark shelf. The single figure at the left is alone but he is linked with the door’s edge and the items in the window. Select a dark value and follow it around the master’s painting.

In the painting of the dancers, Degas left an empty space in the center of the painting. This was a unique design. The dancers are placed around the edge of the painting. The chair is placed on a diagonal to move us into the painting and toward the teacher. Light to light middle tone values of the dance studio unite the painting.

Different Hues; Same Values. My Landscape Painting, "The Colorful Land"

This is my new painting, The Colorful Land. The dominant color temperature is cool. The dominant value is mid tones. The light is coming from the right. The modeling of the trees is similar to cylindrical modeling. The repetition in my painting, i.e. the trees, maintains unity. The trees also provide rhythm and eye movement. I usually connect the light or dark values for unity. Because of the spaces among the leaves (lace), the light tones join and unite the painting. The artist, Degas connected his above painting with dark values. The leaves of the trees are painted with several colors. Examine the orange and green leaves. Orange and green are different hues and have different color temperatures. View the gray scale image. The orange and green are the same value and therefore, create a single shape. It is best to have different color temperatures in one shape. One temperature should be dominant.
